Orcasur was born like a set of three villages of temporary social houses in the middle of 50´s. Since its origin, the habitants of the neighbourhood were mostly national immigrants from the rural zones of South of Spain in pursuit of better life conditions and employment guaranties.
In its history, the neighbourhood has faced some challenges like the lack of basic infrastructures, governmental oblivion or poverty reduction and marginality.
During the 70´s only the 11% of the houses had water systems, during the 80´s the heroin hit the population and during the 90´s, the neighbours organize social initiatives for fight against drugs, school dropouts and the delinquency.
Today, these problems re-appeared again and with one of the lowest per capita income in Madrid and growing unemployment, hundreds of people are waiting for state before hard present and uncertain future.
We started this project as a coincidence. We were studying photography in Madrid and we wanted to be photojournalists. We wanted to feed the media with our photos, and Orcasur is a good place to start. It´s so close to the centre of Madrid and has a huge span of media attention. It contains violence, drugs, and marginality...
But gradually while we were working on the street, the people and their lives caught us.
This society opened up to us and we could understand, mature and be more critical with our images and photographic language. Our approximation to take the images changed and we started to ask us a lot of questions about things that before were unseen for us.
We started this project 3 years ago and we always consider it as an open project, growing up. – that´s life – that attempt to document the daily life of a society. The result that we have is the solution of many errors and a little of success.
We are stubborn and people not always understand our work methods, fragmented, marked in a space to work, with different audio-visual formats or with a lot of micro histories sometimes opposite with each other.
This method of work allow us to make new dialogues and one hyper-textual narrative that let to the active reader, understand it, be a member of it and modify the speech. Making a direct link with the society portrayed.
It is not our business ... but if you ask our personal opinion... We hope they'll lose everything.
Over the next months (October to December 2015) we will find in the "banlieue" of Paris to develop a project in continuity with what was done in Orcasur, Madrid. Our study will emerge from the comparison of both districts, with the premise that “a set of measures on major escalation produce identical or similar results in different societies”. Demonstrating in this way, that ideas developed to date on the impact of urban planning and social determinism can be extrapolated to other territories.
All of that will be shown to the pubic through the exhibition to be held next March 26, 2016 in the festival Circulation(s) - on the water tower of Centre Centquatre - which will be occupied by the full audio-visual work belonging to both projects. In the moment, we are supported by Marion Hilsen (fetart) and Sandra Maunac (independent curator) to develop this new stage.
We hope that the project to continue and it could be active part of the neighbourhood. Other people could be part of AQE with others visions outside photography and his own actors could be active part in the dialogue. It could be great.
