Greece is in war. We are being constantly attacked as we are in a war, things are not good. Our economy is sinking, but what really bothers me is the social impact and all of the misery that fill our lives. We need to take things in our hands and we shouldn't wait for any saviours… I trust in the psychology of Greeks.
The Syriza government has betrayed us. We trusted a left-winged political party for the first time, But it is a complete fiasco since they couldn’t keep the promises about exiting the austerity measures. It looks like a grass root party has been brought in power to vote for measures that are hard on people, so that they don’t react.
What is impressive are the actual events taking place at the island, I have just recorded some moments.
Every August 15, Orthodox Christians from all over the world crawl to the church of Our Lady of Tinos in Greece. As soon as they disembark the boat at the port of the island of Tinos, many believers fall on their knees and begin the difficult journey to the church. Their aim is to touch the holy icon of Virgin Mary, which can be found inside and is believed to have healing powers.
The icon is believed to be the handiwork of Saint Luke. According to legend, its whereabouts had been unknown until the first day of the creation of the Modern Greek state. That's when the Virgin Mary visited Saint Pelagia (just a simple nun at the time) and revealed where the icon had been buried. Our Lady of Tinos was consequently declared the patron saint of Greece and a nationwide fund collection was carried out for the building of a church to house it. The first pilgrimage took place in 1823 and since then it constitutes the biggest Greek Orthodox pilgrimage.
Believers usually offer the Saint a promise, as well as valuables, in the hope that their prayers will be answered. Often you'll hear prayers for good health or miraculous recoveries, but some can be as prosaic as good exam results.
Is it that so obvious?
Apart from the fact that I am interested in religion and faith as well as how people are involved with them, I love to make pictures in those situations because in them I find the heroes, costumes, sets and beautiful light to construct the photographic world I have imagined.
I am greatly inspired from the Greek author Nikos Kazantzakis, who has translated the concepts of religion-God-faith by his own vision, which differs philosophically from that of the official religion in Greece.
It needs to inspire me definitely. Also throughout my projects I always try to express my inner feelings as well as my philosophy.
My main goal is to continue and be able to travel across Greece and take pictures.
At the same time I am involved in a big cooperative project with two more photographers in the opening of a physical space which will be used as a meeting place for photographers, organizing exhibitions, lessons, workshops, seminars, screenings and much more.
